CHAPTER 11

A NEW ROAR AND A TREMOR shook the area.

“ Chances are that it is an erupting Chilean volcano.” Said Emil. “Several volcanoes, including El Chaiten and the Cordon Caulle-Puyehue volcano system have been covering this whole region with ash for some years. They can resume their violent activity at any time.”

“ And have they created hazards?" Asked Teresa uneasy.

“In Chile authorities had to evacuate a wide area around the volcano, and the "pen" of ash, including pieces of pumice, has traveled through the Argentine Patagonia up to the Atlantic Ocean, reaching as far as Buenos Aires, to 1600 kilometers northeast.”

“ And do you think that it is to erupt again?”

“ The volcanoes are very unpredictable, Teresa. The truth is that for more than a year that there has been no calm.”

After a while the situation quieted. Always eager Marcelo said.

“ Let's continue with our plan. The sooner we finish here, the better.”

“ I'll have to stay in this area even in the case we find what we are looking for.” Replied resignedly Amalric.

They were obviously crossing the bottom of a glacial valley. The vegetation grew abundantly among the rocks that had once formed the moraine of the glacier. The valley was narrowing and in the middle of the forest the ascending slopes could be seen on both sides.

Finally they found themselves facing a fork; two canyons equally covered with vegetation descended, one straight ahead of the path they were following and another oriented to the west. Faced with the dilemma, Teresa resolutely pointed toward the latter.

“ You see Emil, we don´t need the pendulum.” Said Marcelo.

“ Of course we don´t. I repeat that the essential thing is the psychological component that depends on the dowser and not of on external object.” Replied Emil. “Anyway, I do not think we are far from the point that I marked on the map.”

Teresa was obviously disturbed, and twitched without paying much attention to her surroundings so she did not hear the conversation between her husband and Emil. Amalric constantly watched her with a mixture of curiosity and anxiety. The woman suddenly quickened her pace, threw the bag pack on the floor to move with greater speed and subject to great excitement screamed.

“ There, behind those rocks.” She signaled a solid stone in front of her, thereupon she began ascending a steep slope.

“ Wait.” Said the husband. “Don’t go alone.” As he saw she wouldn´t pay attention also got rid of his burden and ran after his wife.

Amalric reached the stones immediately after the spouses, and Emil joined them a minute later completely exhausted. Teresa had her face covered with sweat and was obviously under a state of great agitation.
